Okay, hear me out… Would you elope on Mars? Or maybe on a deserted, remote island? A little extreme, I know—but if you’re searching for a truly one-of-a-kind elopement location, let me introduce you to the Bonneville Salt Flats.

I’ve been there a ton, and it’s officially one of my favorite places in the U.S. If a Salt Flats elopement is on your radar, you’re in luck!

This place is so cool—like something out of a sci-fi movie. It’s surreal, magical, and unlike any other backdrop. And your elopement photos? Yeah, they’ll be next-level. Hello, instant bragging rights.That said, the Salt Flats are pretty remote, so planning ahead is key. Here’s everything you need to know to make your Bonneville Salt Flats elopement happen!

Tucked away in northwestern Utah, near the Nevada border, the Bonneville Salt Flats are about 110 miles from Salt Lake City.

Spanning 30,000 acres, this location was once a massive lake. Over time, as the water evaporated, it left behind a shimmering white crust of salt and minerals—creating a terrain that looks straight out of another world. Pretty awesome, right?

So, why elope here? Because it’s unlike anywhere else. The views? Breathtaking. The setting? Completely unique. If you’re drawn to adventure and wide-open landscapes, this place is pure magic. It’s remote, peaceful, and lets you be fully present—just the two of you, with nothing but endless horizons around you.

And as an elopement photographer, I can tell you firsthand—your photos here will be unreal. The kind that make you say, “No way that’s actually us.”

Timing is Everything When It Comes To The Salt Flats

This is a big one—timing matters. If you want those stunning, crystal-like patterns in your photos, you’ll need to elope in late spring or summer, when the Salt Flats are completely dry. That crystallized texture is what gives this place its otherworldly vibe.

And yes, you can totally go barefoot! It might look sharp, but I promise—it’s smooth and totally walkable.

But if you’re considering fall or winter? Not so much. Rain turns the Flats into a muddy mess, and that’s definitely not the dreamy backdrop you’re probably imagining. Plus, winter brings racing events, which means you’ll want to avoid motorcycles revving in the background or tire streaks marking up your ceremony spot.

One more thing: Utah summers get hot. Like, really hot. So if you’re eloping here, skip the heavy, long-sleeved dress, and make sure to pack plenty of water and snacks. Once we’re out there, we’re committed—so being prepared is key!

Where to Stay for Your Bonneville Salt Flats Elopement

The Bonneville Salt Flats are huge—about a 90-minute drive from Salt Lake City. The drive feels long mostly because the scenery is so wide open and stretches on forever.

The easiest option is to stay in Salt Lake City the night before and head out in the morning. You’ll find everything you need there: grocery stores, restaurants, and plenty of nice Airbnbs to make your stay comfortable.

If you’d rather be closer to the Salt Flats, Wendover is the nearest city. It’s known for its casinos and nightlife, but it’s also convenient. There are grocery stores, gas stations, and dining options to get what you need.

Hotels in Wendover can be hit or miss, but there’s an Airbnb nearby that works really well for an elopement stay or something more relaxed.

If you want to stay right near the Salt Flats, there’s a great Airbnb just minutes away. It’s modern, quiet, and super convenient—perfect if you want to be close to your shoot location or have a relaxing place to come back to.

Everything You Need To Know Permit Wise

If you want to officially elope in the Salt Flats, then yes, you need a permit. Don’t stress, though, as it’s super easy to get!

It’s known as a Special Use Permit, issued by the Utah state government, so you’ll need to apply for that before you go. I recommend including it in your elopement itinerary for Bonneville Salt Flats at least six months in advance. 

For your marriage to become legally binding, you’ll also need a Utah Marriage License. 

This license will need to be signed by your officiant and two witnesses. You can hire a Utah elopement officiant for the role, or if you have a loved one you trust to perform your ceremony, it’s actually quite quick and easy to become ordained – you just need to apply via a recognized church (like ULC.org!). Your witnesses can be friends, vendors, or complete strangers you meet on the day. The only requirement is that they are over 18 years of age.

Can Your Photographer be Your Witness?

If you’re planning an elopement at the Bonneville Salt Flats, you might be wondering—do you need witnesses? The answer is yes! Utah law requires two witnesses to sign your marriage license.

But don’t worry—if you’re eloping just the two of you, your photographer and officiant can often step in as witnesses. Many elopement photographers (myself included!) are happy to help, so you don’t have to stress about finding extra people.

If you’re opting for a symbolic ceremony, no witnesses are needed since the legal paperwork would already be handled elsewhere. This is why many couples choose to get legally married in their home state and then have a stunning, stress-free elopement at the Salt Flats without any extra requirements.

Few More Things To Know Eloping at the Bonneville Salt Flats

Preparation is Key

When I say the Salt Flats are remote, I mean it. Aside from a small bathroom at the main entrance, it’s nothing but open space—and that’s exactly what makes it so magical. But because of its remoteness, you’ll want to come prepared. Make sure you’ve packed all your essentials: food, water, and everything you’ll need for the ceremony (yep, that includes your flowers and, of course, yourself!).

If you’re planning a setup with chairs or décor, consider hiring a planner—it’ll make all the difference in keeping things stress-free. The more you plan ahead, the smoother and more magical your elopement will be. And don’t worry—I’ll be there to guide you every step of the way.

Embrace the Salt

From your feet to your clothes—and even your car—the salt is all part of the adventure at the Salt Flats.

If you’re renting a car, keep in mind that some companies charge a cleaning fee for salt residue. A quick power wash before returning it can save you the hassle, and luckily, there’s a wash station near the SLC airport that makes it easy. Don’t forget to rinse the tires too—salt loves to get stuck in there!

As for shoes, consider going barefoot. The salt won’t hurt your feet, and if you’re worried about your fancy heels, just know they’ll pick up some character along the way. I splurged on shoes for my Big Sur elopement, and while the sand forever changed them, they now tell a story. The same goes for the Salt Flats—it’s all part of what makes this place so fun.

Beat the Crowds

For the best experience—and those stunning wedding photos with the Salt Flats all to yourselves—aim for a sunrise elopement on a midweek date. The summer months can bring more visitors, but an early start means you’ll get to enjoy the peaceful, empty landscape. And even if there are crowds, don’t worry! The Flats are so expansive that you’ll always be able to find a secluded spot to call your own.

Avoid Speed Week

One important thing to keep in mind: Speed Week. This annual event attracts a large number of cars, causing noise and leaving tire tracks across the area. While the Salt Flats offer plenty of space, I recommend avoiding the event to experience the Flats at their best. Sunrise or Sunset?

Sunrise offers that magical golden hour light—perfect for photography. The midday sun can be harsh, so if we can’t shoot at sunset for any reason, sunrise is a fantastic alternative.

The night sky here is completely free of light pollution, so if you’re craving a starry evening, come back later for a breathtaking view of the constellations. While camping isn’t allowed, you can still visit at night. Just be prepared for a dark drive back to your Airbnb.
