If you’re planning an elopement in 2025 or 2026 (hey, it’s never too early), choosing the right location is one of the biggest parts of the process—and honestly, one of the most exciting. You want somewhere that actually feels like you—a place with the kind of energy, scenery, and accessibility that fits what you’re dreaming up.
My biggest piece of advice? Try to separate from Pinterest as much as you can. Let it inspire you, but then step back and really ask yourself: Can I picture us here?
When my husband and I were planning our elopement, we originally thought it had to be Yosemite (mostly because Instagram was shouting that at us). But once we got quiet and really tuned into what we wanted, we landed on Big Sur—and it was perfect. When you know, you know. Give yourself the space to feel that out.
If you’re not totally sure how to plan this whole thing yet, starting with your photographer (hi, that’s me!) and then choosing your location is a great first step. From there, you can look at dates, seasons, and how the weather might line up in each spot.
This guide breaks down 13 of the best elopement locations to consider for your elopement. I’m sharing what makes each one special, what to know before going, and when the best time is to elope there. Hopefully, it helps you start visualizing what this could look like for you.
Emerald Lake, Colorado

If you’re dreaming of mountains, alpine lakes, and crisp Colorado air—Emerald Lake is a showstopper. It’s tucked inside Rocky Mountain National Park and is one of the most photogenic (and accessible) lakes in the park. The hike is about 3.5 miles round-trip with a gentle incline and a huge visual payoff.
Why it’s a great elopement spot:
You’ll pass two other lakes (Nymph + Dream Lake) on the way up, and each one could easily be its own ceremony backdrop. If you want that dramatic mountain reflection in the water and golden light streaming through the trees, this one checks a lot of boxes.
Best time to elope:
Late June through early October, when the trail is clear of snow and the lake has that unreal turquoise color.
More on Emerald Lake, Colorado:
- The closest major airport to Emerald Lake is Calgary International Airport (YYC), about a 3-hour drive away.
- You’ll need a Special Use Permit from the national park, and they do cap the number of ceremonies per day. Apply early.
- When it’s just the two of you, many trails in Crested Butte don’t require a permit or extensive planning—making it easy to plan a spontaneous hiking elopement.
- Crested Butte, Colorado is a stunning location with plenty of scenic trails. Some of my favorites include the Lower Loop Trailhead, Woods Walk, and Brush Creek—but you can explore even more options here.
- Go early in the day or on a weekday to avoid crowds—this spot is popular for a reason.
- No arches, chairs, or setups are allowed—just nature and your vows.
Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah

The Salt Flats feel like another planet (in the best way). Wide open, white, and surreal, they give you a blank canvas where you can really make the day your own. The sunsets here stretch forever, and the light is everything.
Why it’s a great elopement spot:
It’s incredibly unique and like no other. If you’re looking for something totally different and spontaneous, this is the spot.
Best time to elope:
May through October is the ideal time to elope at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Winter months are unique because the salt flats often flood, turning into a huge reflective mirror. So, if you’re after that iconic octagon-shaped, raised salt look, summer is definitely the season to choose.
More on the Salt Flats:
- The closest airport to the Bonneville Salt Flats is Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC), about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive away.
- A Special Use Permit is required for elopements or any wedding ceremonies at the Salt Flats. Be sure to apply through the Bureau of Land Management well in advance. Click here for more.
- There’s no shade, so plan for early morning or golden hour. Bring plenty of water.
- For accommodations, Wendover is the closest town (kinda like a mini Las Vegas), but Salt Lake City is also a great option for your stay before the drive out.
- Looking for a unique stay minutes from the flats? Above the flats is unreal.
- Feeling like adding a vintage car to your experience. Check out Utah Vintage Cars.

Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

If you want that classic “big mountain” look without hiking for miles, this is the spot. The Tetons rise steeply and dramatically with no foothills blocking the view. You get incredible backdrops like lakes, open meadows, and plenty of natural light.
Why it’s a great elopement spot:
You can keep it intimate and easy-access or go for a deeper adventure elopement. The park has designated ceremony sites for groups (like Schwabacher Landing, Mountain View Turnpoint or Glacier View Turnpoint), but if it’s just the two of you, you’re allowed to explore more freely with a permit. More on Grand Teton permits here.
Best time to elope:
Mid-June through early October. July and August bring wildflowers and warm temps, while late September gives you fall colors + fewer crowds.
More on Grand Teton National Park:
- The closest airport to Grand Teton National Park is Jackson Hole Airport (JAC), just about a 20-minute drive away. It’s super convenient and right in the heart of the Tetons.
- You’ll need a Special Use Permit to elope inside the park—apply early, especially for summer.
- If you are planning for 2026, Applications will open in November
- Wildlife is active here (including bears), so follow all safety guidelines.
- Nearby Jackson Hole makes a great base with lots of lodging + great food. The Virginian Lodge is perfect if you are having a small family apart of your experience.
- If you’re looking for a place to stay in Jackson, you’ll find plenty of condos and vacation homes listed on Airbnb—many of which are second homes rented out seasonally. Like this one!

Lake Crescent, Washington

If you want a moody, misty lakeside elopement with tall evergreens and mountain reflections, Lake Crescent in Olympic National Park is a great choice. The water is clear and deep blue, and the setting is peaceful and romantic—ideal for couples looking for something intimate and naturally beautiful.
Why it’s a great elopement spot:
Lake Crescent offers a serene setting with easy access to scenic spots along the shore. It’s ideal for couples seeking a quiet, nature-filled ceremony without the need for a strenuous hike.
Best time to elope:
Late spring through early fall (May to October) provides the best weather and scenery. Summer months offer warm, sunny days and long daylight hours, while fall brings vibrant foliage and fewer crowds.
More on Lake Crescent, Washington:
- The closest airport to Lake Crescent is Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), roughly a 2.5 to 3-hour drive away.
- If your elopement includes more than 5 people, you’ll need a Special Use Permit from the park. The permit costs $50 and can be requested by email.
- Port Angeles would be the closest town (30 minutes)
- Some great ceremony spots around Lake Crescent include the dock near Lake Crescent Lodge, Bovee’s Meadow, and East Beach.
- Weekdays are less crowded, offering more privacy.
- Nearby Port Angeles provides convenient lodging and amenities.
Big Sur, California

Big Sur is the epitome of coastal California beauty—rugged cliffs, crashing waves, and towering redwoods all in one place. It’s a dream location for couples who want dramatic scenery and a touch of adventure. My husband and I eloped here and I 10/10 recommend.
Why it’s a great elopement spot:
Big Sur offers a variety of stunning backdrops, from secluded beaches to forests. Whether you’re looking for a cliffside ceremony or a quiet moment among the redwoods, Big Sur delivers.
Best time to elope:
May through October is ideal, with spring offering blooming wildflowers and fall providing clear skies and warm weather. Weekdays are recommended to avoid crowds and traffic.
More on Big Sur, California:
- The closest major airport to Big Sur is Monterey Regional Airport (MRY), about a 45-minute drive away. If you’re coming from farther out, San Jose or San Francisco airports are about 2.5 to 3 hours away by car.
- To elope in Big Sur’s state parks, you will need a special event permit—especially for intimate ceremonies with 10 or fewer guests at hike-in spots.
- Garrapata State Park is a notable exception, allowing up to 25 guests. Permit fees vary by location: Pfeiffer Big Sur and Julia Pfeiffer Burns charge around $425 for up to 10 people, while Garrapata’s fee is approximately $400 for up to 25 guests.
- The weather can be unpredictable; be prepared for fog and varying temperatures.
- Lodging options range from luxury resorts to cozy cabins, with nearby towns like Carmel and Monterey offering additional accommodations.
- Looking for even more information on eloping in Big Sur? Read the full guide here
Tunnels Beach (Kauai, Hawaii)

Kauai has to be one of my favorite locations! If you are picturing cliffs, golden beaches, and tropical waterfalls—Kauai delivers in a big way and might be the go for you guys! Often called the “Garden Island,” for super obvious reasons.
Why it’s a great elopement spot:
Whether you’re barefoot on the soft sand at Tunnels Beach or overlooking the ocean from a Nā Pali Coast trail, Kauai gives you those once-in-a-lifetime backdrops without needing much extra. You’ve got dense jungles, misty mountains, and beachside golden hour all within a short drive. Hanalei Bay and Wailua Falls are other favorites for couples wanting a mix of scenery.
Best time to elope:
April to June or September to early November—these shoulder seasons offer great weather, fewer crowds, and vibrant greenery without the peak summer rush.
More on Kauai, Hawaii
- The main airport is Lihue Airport (LIH), with direct flights from many West Coast cities.
- If you’re planning to elope in a state park or on a beach, you’ll probably need a film or photography permit and permission for your ceremony. Hawaii’s permitting process is pretty straightforward, but it’s a good idea to plan ahead—especially for popular places like Haena State Park near Tunnels Beach.
- The north shore, where Tunnels and Hanalei are, tends to get more rain, so think about timing your day carefully and maybe choose sunrise for more privacy and softer light.
- Public beaches don’t allow large setups or arches, so it’s really just you, your vows, the waves, and a few palm trees swaying nearby.
- And if you’re looking for a fun experience, kayaking here is absolutely amazing. I went once, and honestly, it was the best experience of my life.
Cannon Beach, Oregon

Cannon Beach is one of the most recognizable spots on the Oregon Coast—easy to get to, walkable, and great for couples who want something beautiful without needing to hike or travel far (like, at all).
Why it’s a great elopement spot:
It’s simple and scenic. Haystack Rock gives you a insane backdrop without needing to trek into the wilderness. There are also nearby spots like Hug Point or Ecola State Park (this one next) if you want more variety. It’s a solid option if you want a beach elopement that’s both beautiful and low-effort.
Best time to elope:
Late May through early October is your best bet for dry weather. July and August are the warmest but also the busiest. Weekdays and sunrise/sunset times are quieter and easier for photos.
More on Cannon Beach:
- The closest airport to Cannon Beach is Portland International Airport (PDX), about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive away. It’s super convenient with plenty of flights, and the drive up the coast is really pretty too.
- Eloping at Cannon Beach is refreshingly simple—no permit is needed as long as your guest list stays under 50. Planning a larger celebration? Then you’ll want to secure a special use permit to make it official.
- Get all squared away on their main website here
- Weather on the Oregon Coast can shift quickly. Even in summer, fog and wind are common. Bring layers and plan to go with the flow.
- Good news for dog lovers—Cannon Beach is pet-friendly and even allows pups to roam off-leash! Just be sure to follow the B.A.R.K. guidelines to keep the beach safe and enjoyable for everyone.
- There are plenty of places to stay right in Cannon Beach, and it’s only about 90 minutes from Portland, making it super accessible.

Pacific Northwest (Ecola Sate Park)

Ecola State Park is just about 5 minutes from Cannon Beach and gives you a bit more variety if you want to mix things up.
Why it’s a great elopement spot:
You get stunning coastal views, forested trails, and dramatic cliffs—all without a long drive. It’s perfect if you want the ocean look but also some greenery and elevation for different photo options. You can easily do parts of your elopement here and then head to Cannon Beach for a totally different scene, making for a really well-rounded day.
Best time to elope:
Same as Cannon Beach — late May through early October is your best bet for good weather. Sunrise or sunset are beautiful times to avoid crowds and get the best light.
More on Ecola State Park:
- Thinking of saying your vows at Ecola State Park? If you’re keeping things simple—just the two of you and a quiet exchange—you likely won’t need a permit. But if you’re planning to bring in chairs, an arbor, or anything that requires setup, a special use permit is required. Hosting more than 50 guests? You’ll need one then, too. Permits can be obtained directly through the park.
- The park is pretty popular, so planning for weekdays and early times will help keep it quieter.
- Parking can fill up quickly during peak season, so plan ahead.
- If you’re coming from Cannon Beach, it’s a quick 5-minute drive, so you can easily enjoy both spots in one day.
- As of January 2, 2025, the day-use parking fee at Ecola State Park is $10 per vehicle.

Samuel H. Boardman, Oregon

Samuel H. Boardman is one of Oregon’s most beautiful coastal stretches, about an hour south of Cannon Beach but totally worth the drive if you want jaw-dropping ocean views without the crowds.
Why it’s a great elopement spot:
You get rugged coastline, hidden beaches, natural arches, and quiet beaches that feel totally private. It’s perfect for couples who want that wild, untouched vibe and love exploring a bit between ceremony spots.
Best time to elope:
Late spring through early fall (May to September) is your safest bet for good weather and calmer seas. Weekdays are best since weekends can bring visitors, but this corridor is generally less crowded than more popular Oregon Coast spots.
More on Samuel H. Boardman:
- There are no official ceremony permits required for most spots, but it’s good to be respectful since it’s a protected scenic area.
- Access can involve some hiking on trails and uneven terrain — comfy shoes and light gear are recommended.
- Some of the most breathtaking elopement spots in Samuel H. Boardman Scenic Corridor include Secret Beach, Indian Sands, and the iconic Natural Bridges (a personal favorite). Whaleshead Beach is another stunning option, offering dramatic coastline views and a sense of seclusion perfect for an intimate ceremony.
- Cell service can be spotty, so plan logistics and communication ahead of time.
- Lodging options are limited nearby, so maybe consider staying in Brookings or Gold Beach for the night.

Isle of Skye, Scotland

Isle of Skye in Scotland is a stunning spot for couples who want dramatic landscapes — think moody mountains, rugged coastline, and mystical vibes.
Why it’s a great elopement spot:
Skye might just be one of my all-time favorite places I’ve visited. It’s a stunning blend of wild, rugged landscapes and serene, tucked-away spots—from the magical Fairy Pools and ancient castles to dramatic sea cliffs. Plus, Portree is the sweetest little town you’ll fall for instantly. If you’re after that epic, storybook vibe without the crowds, Skye is absolutely perfect. Chef’s kiss.
Best time to elope:
Late spring through early fall (May to September) is your best window for decent weather and longer days. Keep in mind, Scottish weather can be unpredictable, so layering and waterproof gear are musts.
More on Isle of Skye, Scotland:
- The closest airport to the Isle of Skye is Inverness Airport (INV), about a 2.5 to 3-hour drive away, offering regular domestic flights and some international connections. Alternatively, Glasgow International Airport (GLA) and Edinburgh Airport (EDI) are larger but approximately 5 to 6 hours away by car.
- You must submit the M10 Marriage Notice Form to the Portree Registry Office between 3 months and 29 days before your elopement. If you’re coming from outside the UK, don’t forget to check if you need a Marriage Visitor Visa to legally marry here.
- Some of the best spots include the Quiraing, Old Man of Storr, Brothers Point, Fairy Pools, Neist Point and Fairy Glen. For a unique experience, consider a boat trip to Loch Coruisk
- Some spots require a bit of hiking or driving on narrow roads.
- Accommodations range from cozy B&Bs to remote cottages—book early, especially in peak season.
- Staying in Portree? I highly recommend the Portree Hotel—it’s honestly the most perfect spot right in town. And if you love a cozy coffee break, Birch Coffee Shop is absolutely charming. Seriously, you’ve got to check it out here!
- Flights typically arrive via Glasgow or Edinburgh, with a scenic drive or ferry to Skye.
Southern Iceland (Skógafoss and Black Sand Beach)

Southern Iceland is a top pick for couples who want jaw-dropping landscapes — think waterfalls, black sand beaches, glaciers, and volcanoes all within a short drive.
Why it’s a great elopement spot:
This area packs in a lot of variety, so you can have a ceremony next to a waterfall like Skógafoss, then head to the iconic Reynisfjara black sand beach or even glacier fields nearby. It’s perfect if you want insane nature without spending hours driving between locations.
Best time to elope:
Late spring through early fall (May to September) offers the best weather and access to all the spots. Summer gives you nearly 24 hours of daylight, which is amazing for photos and flexibility, but it’s also the busiest time, so plan accordingly.
More on Southern Iceland:
- It’s surprisingly easy to get to. Most of the must-see spots are just a few hours from Reykjavik, and renting a car or booking a tour through Reykjavik Excursions or BusTravel Iceland makes it stress-free.
- Just make sure to peek at SafeTravel.is for real-time road and travel conditions, especially if you’re heading into more remote areas.
- And if you’re wondering about permits or where you can and can’t say your vows, this Iceland Elopement Permit Guide is a great place to start.
- Weather can change fast — be ready with layers and for potential rain.
- Some popular spots get crowded, especially in summer, so consider weekdays or early mornings.
- Roads are generally good, but if you want to explore off the main routes, a 4×4 can be helpful.
- You’ll find everything from cozy guesthouses to modern hotels in towns like Vík and Hella — just be sure to book early if you’re traveling during peak season. A couple of standout options? Hótel Vík í Mýrdal for a central, comfortable stay, and Black Beach Suites for ocean views and a little more privacy.
- Diamond Beach is pure magic too — black sand scattered with glowing ice chunks. Just across the road, you can hop on a glacier lagoon boat tour for a surreal, icy adventure to round out your day.
- The closest major airport is Keflavík International Airport near Reykjavik, about 2–3 hours’ drive from many southern spots.
Santorini, Greece

Santorini is iconic for its whitewashed buildings, blue domes, and stunning caldera views — basically, the picture-perfect spot many couples dream of for their elopement.
Why it’s a great elopement spot:
You get that classic Mediterranean vibe with amazing sunsets, cliffside views, and charming villages like Oia and Fira. It’s small but packed with options for a ceremony—from the edge of volcanic cliffs to beautiful beaches below.
Best time to elope:
Late spring (May to early June) and early fall (September to October) are ideal. The weather’s warm but not too hot, and you’ll avoid the busy tourist crowds of high summer.
More on Santorini, Greece:
- The island is small and easy to navigate, which means you can explore iconic villages like Oia, Imerovigli, and Fira all in one stay — each with its own charm and unreal cliffside views.
- Caldera views are where it’s at — think: a ceremony with the cliffs behind you, whitewashed buildings glowing in golden light, and the Aegean Sea stretching out forever.
- Island hopping is easy from Santorini! After your elopement, you can catch a quick ferry to nearby gems like Mykonos, Paros, or Naxos for a dreamy mini-honeymoon.
- Summer is peak season (and hot!), but late spring or early fall offers that sweet spot: still-warm days, golden sunsets, and way fewer tourists crowding the caldera.
- Santorini’s sunsets are famous for a reason — if you want to avoid the crowds in Oia, head to Skaros Rock (a bit of a walk but so worth it) or a tucked-away rooftop in Imerovigli for an intimate, front-row seat.
Lago Di Braies in the Dolomites (Italy)

Lago di Braies in the Dolomites is a stunning alpine lake with clear blue water surrounded by mountains — it’s a super popular spot for couples wanting that classic mountain lake vibe.
Why it’s a great place to elope:
The lake’s calm, turquoise water and the dramatic peaks around it create a really peaceful, picture-perfect setting. It’s perfect if you want an intimate ceremony by the water with amazing views, but without the huge crowds if you time it right.
Best time to elope:
Late spring through early fall (May to September) is the best time to visit. Summer offers warm weather and open hiking trails, while late spring and early fall have fewer tourists and softer light for photos. Try to avoid weekends and peak holiday times to keep it quiet.
More on Lago di Braies:
- The closest airport to Lago di Braies is Bolzano Airport, about an hour and a half away by car. Innsbruck Airport is also nearby, around the same drive time, and Venice Airport is about three hours away.
- Lago di Braies is a total showstopper (and wildly popular), so if you’re dreaming of eloping here, plan for sunrise or sunset to skip the crowds and soak up that glowy light on the emerald water.
- If you opt for a symbolic wedding ceremony, no permits or fees are needed. Plus, you don’t need a photography permit to capture your elopement in the Dolomites.
- Getting legally married in Italy as a foreigner is definitely doable but takes some planning—usually about 6 to 8 months for the paperwork. You’ll likely need documents like an Atto Notorio and a Nulla Osta from your consulate. Most couples we work with handle the legal stuff back home and have a symbolic ceremony in the Dolomites instead.
- There’s a beautiful, easy walking trail that loops around the lake — perfect for a peaceful moment together or some gorgeous portraits surrounded by the mountains.
- You can rent the iconic La Palafitta boathouse for a bit more privacy, but just know that even with a private booking, you’ll likely still have a few curious onlookers nearby.
- Visiting between July and September? Heads up: the road to the lake is closed to cars from 9 AM to 4 PM, so you’ll want to grab a parking reservation or arrive outside those hours.
- Want to turn your elopement into a little getaway? Stay close by at places like Hotel Lago di Braies, Skyview Chalets Toblach Lake, Gailerhof Hotel B&B Superior, or Silentium Dolomites Chalet — all charming and perfect for a romantic stay.
- Looking for something more low-key? You could always say your vows somewhere more tucked away in the Dolomites (less people and crowds), and just swing by Lago di Braies for portraits — best of both worlds.
